Curriculum
Bible:
Students learn how to make good choices in a variety of life situations.  We use selected Bible stories, memorize related Bible verses, and use arts and craft activities and object lessons to reinforce the lessons.

Reading: Students are given the foundational building blocks for reading.  They are taught to pay attention to a speaker without interrupting and to retell the events of the story after hearing it.  They also respond to the story with a drawing and other forms of art.

Language/Phonics:  Students learn to identify and name the alphabet letters and learn the sounds of all the consonants and the long and short vowels. They also learn to combine letter sounds to read and write simple words.

Handwriting:  Students learn to form each alphabet letter correctly in both upper and lower case and the numbers 1 through 20.  They also learn to write their first and last name.

Math: Students are introduced to numbers and number sense, geometry and measurement, and data analysis.  The program uses pattern blocks, teddy bear counters, graphing, linking cubes and more to introduce math concepts.

Science: The students explore God’s creation through a variety of experiments and observations.  Some of the topics covered are creation, senses, sunlight and heat, California dairies, seasons, weather, earth, moon, stars, planets, seeds, plants, forest, animals, and water.

Social Studies:  Students learn about safety, family, friendship and themselves.

Physical Education: Weekly P.E. time helps develop fine and gross motor skills.   The activities assist in developing balance, throwing, kicking and running skills.

Music: Students develop a basic understanding of music through singing and dance.

Art: Students become competent using scissors and glue.  They learn about color and design through the use of various media.

Our Kindergarten teacher is Mrs. Sarah Rowton, who performs her tasks with knowledge, experience and great care for the children. She meets the kids at their level.  The children feel successful and flourish in her class because Mrs. Rowton allows them to grasp each new concept before moving on. She has been teaching in Alameda schools for over 20 years and has been at ACS since 2000.
