Children must be 5 years old by September 1, 2014 in order to enter kindergarten. This is a change for ACS that the Board approved. This date aligns ACS with the state mandated age. The Kindergarten Readiness ACT, signed into law in 2010, changed the entry date to September 1.
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) was also created by this new California law, the Kindergarten Readiness Act. TK provides an educational opportunity for children who turn 5 years old in the fall, specifically from September 1 to Dec 1. TK classes have been available in public education for a couple of years. At our January meeting, our Board approved offering a TK program. TK and kindergarten will be offered in the same classroom.
TK has been described as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten. TK gives students a head start that will help provide students with a strong foundation for success in elementary classes. TK offers students a developmentally appropriate curriculum.
Beginning this fall, ACS will offer a TK classroom. The school day will go from 8:00 to 12:15. The mornings will be filled with a combination of TK and kindergarten activities. The Kindergarteners will fill the afternoons with their curriculum of math and reading.
